About

What Redact PDF does

Redact a PDF properly: drag over anything to mark it, or search for a word and mark every match, and on export the marked text, pictures and drawings are removed from the file itself. The download is then re-read and checked, so the redaction is proved rather than assumed.

When a page is built in a way that can't be redacted piece by piece, the editor says so first, then turns that page into an image with the marked areas blacked out.

Everything happens on your own machine: the file is decoded, processed and re-encoded by your browser, and never leaves your device. There is no upload, no queue and no account.

Why this one

Why use Redact PDF here

  • Removed, not covered

The words and pictures under a mark are taken out of the file, not hidden behind a black box that can be lifted off or copied from.

  • Proved on the download

The exported file is re-read and checked, so you know the marked text is gone before you send it.

  • Find every match

Search for a name or number and mark every place it appears in one go. The marks undo together as one step.

  • Never leaves your device

You redact a document because it is sensitive. This one is redacted in your browser and never uploaded.

How it works

How to use Redact PDF

  1. Drop the PDF here. The editor opens over this page with Redact chosen.

  2. Drag over anything you want gone, or search for a word and mark every match.

  3. Check the marks on each page; take one off with Delete or its ×.

  4. Export. The marked content is removed, the file is checked, and then you download it.

Questions

Frequently asked

How do I redact a PDF?

Drop it here and the editor opens with Redact chosen. Drag over what should go, or find a word and mark every match, then Export: the marked content is removed and the download is checked.

Is the text really removed, or just covered?

Removed. Many redactions are black boxes drawn over text that is still in the file and can be copied out from under them. Here the marked text, pictures and drawings are taken out of the page itself, and the exported file is checked to confirm it.

Can I redact every mention of a name?

Yes. Search for it and mark every match at once; the marks undo together as one step if you change your mind.

Can I redact a scanned document?

Yes, after OCR: recognise the page's English text first (under More), and the words it finds can be searched for and redacted like any other.

What if a page can't be redacted piece by piece?

Some pages are built so that their content can't be taken out one piece at a time. The editor tells you which before anything happens, then turns that page into an image with the marked areas blacked out, so nothing under them survives.

Is it safe to redact confidential documents here?

Yes. The file never leaves your browser, so it is not uploaded, stored or seen by anyone, which is the point of redacting it.

Is it free?

Yes, with no trial, no page limit and no account. Other editors often keep redaction for their paid plans.
