About

What PDF to Markdown does

Turn a PDF into clean Markdown. Headings become #, lists become lists, tables become Markdown tables, and links are kept — ready to paste into a README, a wiki, a static site or a note app.

Everything happens on your own machine: the file is decoded, processed and re-encoded by your browser, and never leaves your device. There is no upload, no queue and no account.

Why this one

Why use PDF to Markdown here

  • GitHub-flavoured Markdown

Pipe tables, struck-through text and fenced code, ready for a README, a wiki or a notes app.

  • Structure, not just text

Headings become #, lists stay lists, tables stay tables and links keep their targets.

  • Scanned pages read too

Pictures of text are recognised on your device, in English, and come back as Markdown.

  • Nothing is uploaded

The PDF is converted in your browser; it never leaves your device.

How it works

How to use PDF to Markdown

  1. Drop in a PDF, click to browse, or paste one from the clipboard.

  2. It is read and converted as it arrives, with the Markdown shown beside the text it came from.

  3. Choose whether pictures are written out beside the Markdown.

  4. Download the .md on its own, or a .zip when there are pictures to go with it.

Questions

Frequently asked

How do I convert a PDF to Markdown?

Drop the PDF here. It is converted as it arrives, with the Markdown shown beside the text it came from. Download the .md, or a zip when there are pictures to go with it.

Is the Markdown GitHub-compatible?

Yes. It is GitHub-flavoured Markdown: tables are pipe tables with a header row, struck-through text uses ~~ and code keeps its fences, so it renders the same on GitHub, GitLab, Obsidian and most static-site generators.

What happens to tables?

They become Markdown tables where the shape allows it — a header row and cells. Markdown has no way to express a merged cell or a nested table, so anything that cannot be said in the format is laid out as plainly as possible rather than silently dropped.

What about pictures?

They are pulled out of the PDF and referenced from the Markdown, which is why that download is a zip: the .md and its pictures travel together, with the paths already correct.

Why Markdown rather than Word?

Markdown is plain text, so it belongs in a repository, a documentation site or a notes app, and it reads sensibly even unrendered. If you want to keep editing the document as a document, PDF to Word is the better path.

Does a scanned PDF work?

Yes. Pages that are pictures of text are recognised on your device, in English, and come back as Markdown text. Check the result on scans; a typed PDF converts exactly.

Is it free, and is my PDF uploaded?

It is free, with no limits and no sign-up, and nothing is uploaded.
