Frequently asked questions
- How much smaller will my images get?
- It depends heavily on the source. Photographs typically compress a great deal; images that are already well-optimised, or that contain flat colour and sharp edges, compress much less. Rather than promise a number, the tool shows you the actual before and after size for your files.
- Does compressing repeatedly degrade the image?
- It would, which is why this tool does not do it. Moving the slider re-compresses from the original file you dropped in, not from the previous result, so you only ever apply one round of lossy encoding.
- What is the difference between compressing and resizing?
- Compressing keeps the same pixel dimensions and stores them more efficiently. Resizing reduces the pixel dimensions themselves. For large photos, resizing first usually saves far more than compression alone — the two are often best used together.
