- Why do my iPhone photos open as HEIC?
- Apple made HEIC the default capture format because it stores comparable quality in roughly half the space of JPG. The trade-off is compatibility: plenty of software outside the Apple ecosystem still cannot read it.
- Will I lose quality converting HEIC to JPG?
- Converting between two lossy formats does involve a re-encode, so the result is not bit-identical. At default quality the difference is not visible in normal viewing. Choose PNG if you want to avoid a second lossy pass entirely.
- Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
- No. Decoding and conversion both run in your browser, which matters more than usual here — camera-roll photos are personal, and they never leave your device.
